Rebels Enter Top-25 Rankings

March 5, 2018

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team, which sits 11-1 on the year, enters Collegiate Baseball's NCAA Division I Baseball Poll at No. 23 this week. The Rebels last appeared in the newspaper's poll on April 28, 2014, when the squad was No. 27.

After starting the year 3-1, UNLV has rattled off eight straight wins with a four-game sweep of Columbia followed by a midweek win at UC Riverside and, most recently, a three-game sweep of Mountain West-foe Fresno State. The win streak is the longest, to date, since the 2013 squad reeled off 10 straight.

The team's 11-1 start is the second best in program history and only trails the 1971 squad's 15-1 opening to its campaign.

"I'm happy for the kids and the University that they are getting acknowledged for their hard work and results," said head coach Stan Stolte. "But polls mean nothing once the game starts and it's 0-0, unless they changed the rules."

Prior to the No. 27 ranking in CBN's week 11 poll in 2014, the Scarlet & Gray was mentioned in all five major polls: No. 16 Perfect Game, No. 20 Baseball America, No. 25 CBN and receiving votes in ESPN and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's polls. The Rebels finished `14 at the NCAA Tournament's Corvallis Regional, and with a 36-25 overall record and a Mountain West regular-season title backed by a 20-10 conference record.

In 2015, UNLV received votes in the preseason, week one and two polls published by CBN and NCBWA as well as in week one and two in D1 Baseball's poll.

UP NEXT: UNLV heads back to the Golden State for a pair of games at CSU Bakersfield and CSUN this Tuesday (6:05 pm) and Wednesday (2:05 pm), respectively.

BACK AT EARL E.: UNLV returns to Wilson Stadium next weekend for a three-game, nonconference series against the Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6:05 pm with games two (2:05 pm) and three (1:05 pm) slated for Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
