Rebels Drop Mountain West Opener In Extras|

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The New Mexico Lobos (7-9, 1-0) ended the UNLV Rebels (14-4, 0-1) 10-game winning streak Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium with a 3-2 win that lasted 10 innings.
The Rebels had 2-1 lead at the end of seven innings, but New Mexico tied the game in the eighth when Luke Campbell scored from second on a Josh Melendez single. Melendez would later hit a double in the 10th that scored pinch runner Logan Lippert from first to give the Lobos a 3-2 lead and eventual win.
Erick Fedde (3-0) got the start for UNLV, pitching 8.0 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six while walking four. Kenny Oakley (2-1) came in for relief and was credited with his first loss of the year. Oakley pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out three and walking three.
It was a pitching duel for most of the game as neither team scored until the sixth inning. UNLV drew first blood when Matt McCallister scored on a New Mexico error. The Lobos evened the game in the seventh, but the Rebels took 2-1 lead when Erik VanMeetren scored on another New Mexico error. The Lobos finished the game with four errors.
The two teams will meet tomorrow in the second of the three-game series. First pitch for Saturday's contest has been moved to noon (12 p.m. PT) to accommodate those fans planning on attending the Mountain West basketball championship games that afternoon and evening at the Thomas & Mack Center. Fans showing tickets to the MW Basketball tournament will receive half-price admission to the baseball game ($4). Kids 12-and-under are free.
