Dodgers Draft Richy In Third Round

June 6, 2014

LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV junior pitcher John Richy became the second Rebel to be taken in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday as the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the third round at 98th overall. It is the first time in history that two Rebels were selected in the top 100 picks of the MLB draft.

“I am really excited and blessed to have this opportunity,” Richy said. “I want to thank everyone who has been there for me along the way.”

Richy joined fellow pitcher Erick Fedde, who was drafted 18th overall by the Washington Nationals on Thursday, on being picked up by a major league squad in this year’s draft. The last time that UNLV had two players drafted in the top 125 was when Matt Williams went third overall and Steve Moser was selected 108th overall in 1986.

“We got a call late on John when recruiting him and actually met him in a Subway before he threw for us in a camp in Colorado the summer after his senior year of high school,” head coach Tim Chambers said. “He had already been accepted to the Merchant Marine Academy and fortunately for John and for UNLV baseball, we were able to talk him out of that. He was a little out of shape, but I told my pitching coach that he was okay, but by the time he is a junior, he is going to be something special. And today he was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round. I’m really excited for him and his family as it is a special story for a great kid.”

Richy led the Rebels in wins with an 11-4 record to go with a 3.20 ERA. He led the Mountain West with 113 strikeouts in 121.0 innings of work en route to garnering All-Mountain West First Team honors. His wins (11) and strikeouts (113) were the most by a UNLV pitcher since Nate Yeskie had 11 wins and 147 strikeouts in 1995.

The Golden, Colo., native compiled a 20-11 record to go with a 3.96 career ERA. He compiled six complete games, including five in 2014, and struck out 189 batters in 240.2 innings of work.

The MLB draft continues Friday with rounds 2-10 and will conclude on Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m. PT with rounds 11-40 on
