UNLV Runnin' Rebels Hosts Loyola Marymount in Season Opener on Saturday

LAS VEGAS, NEV: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels will open their 40th season of basketball against Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). UNLV was 2-0 in exhibtion games. The Runnin' Rebels defeatedUSDBL, 109-84 on Nov. 1.

All Runnin' Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action during the 1997-98 season. Fans can now bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNT's radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM.

TELEVISION: Saturday's game will be televised by FOX Sports West 2. Tom Kelly and former Rebel great Reggie Theus will call the action.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 5:30 p.m. (begins, Nov. 30). The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Dave McCann, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 739-5968. The first coaches show will air on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

PROMOTION: UNLV basketball schedule magnets will be given out to the first 2,500 fans. The schedule magnets feature color action shots of seniors Keon Clark and Tyrone Nesby.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: UNLV leads the series against Loyola Marymount 18-5. LMU defeated UNLV 70-67 on Dec. 2, 1995, in Los Angeles, Calif. UNLV defeated Loyola Marymount 93-77 on Dec. 18, 1993, in the last meeting in the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV is 12-2 all-time against LMU at home. Loyola Marymount lost to the California All-Stars 114-105 on Nov. 1, and lost to Next Level Sports, 92-78 on Nov. 6 in its two exhibition games.

REBEL BASKETBALL LUNCHEONS: The Rebel basketball luncheons featuring Bill Bayno will be held weekly throughout the season at noon. The luncheon features coach Bayno talking about the team's past games and preparation for future games. RUNNIN' REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He begins his third season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. He is UNLV's 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 32-26 (.552). He led UNLV to a 22-10 record last season and a third round NIT appearance. He served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari. Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT HEAD COACH CHARLES BRADLEY: He is in his first season at LMU. His career record over three years at Metro State (Denver) was 37-43.

HOME OPENERS: UNLV is 31-8 (.795) in home openers. The Runnin' Rebels defeated Cal State Northridge 61-59 in last season's home opener. UNLV is 13-1 in home openers at the Thomas & Mack Center.

NEXT UP: UNLV will host Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Chase NIT at 9 p.m. (PST) in the Thomas & Mack Center. The UNLV/EMU winner will face the Kansas/Western Kentucky winner on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m. (PST) on ESPN. The winner of that game will advance to Madison Square Garden for the NIT semi-finals and consolation and/or championship games on Wednesday and Friday, Nov. 26 and Nov. 28.
