Steve Henson is in his seventh year as assistant coach at UNLV. A six-season NBA veteran, he came to UNLV in the spring of 2004 after spending one year as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida. Prior to working at USF, he spent time as an assistant coach as well as an advance scout for the NBA's Atlanta Hawks from 2001-03 working under current UNLV head coach Lon Kruger and then Terry Stotts.

Henson, 42, also worked for Kruger at the University of Illinois as an assistant coach in 1999-2000.

In the summer of 2007 after UNLV's run to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, he was recognized as one of the top 25 assistant coaches in the country by Rivals.com.

A four-year starter at Kansas State University from 1986-90, Henson was a two-time honorable mention All-American and earned All-Big Eight Conference honors as a junior and senior. Playing for Kruger at KSU, Henson is the only player in school history to play in four NCAA Tournaments, including leading the Wildcats to the 1988 Elite Eight. As a junior in 1988-89, he led KSU in scoring with 18.5 points per game. He also led the team in scoring as a senior in 1989-90. As a sophomore he led the nation in free throw shooting percentage, connecting on 92.5 percent of his attempts and as a junior, he finished second in the nation at 92 percent (92-for-100).

Henson holds school career records in assists (582), 3-point field goals made (240-for-537), free throw percentage (.900), steals (190), games played (127), starts (118) and minutes played (4,474). He is No. 2 on the school's career 3-point field goal percentage list (44.7 percent), No. 5 on the career scoring list (1,655 points) and No. 5 on the career field goals made list (527). He was named to the university's all-century team selected in February, 2003, and in October of 2009, Henson was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Henson was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 1990 NBA Draft with the 44th overall selection. He played with five teams in the NBA: Milwaukee, Atlanta, Charlotte, Portland and Detroit. He also played three seasons in the Italian and Greek leagues.

Henson was also a decathlete at KSU. He placed third as a sophomore and a junior at the Big Eight Conference Championships. At the 1989 Big Eight meet (as a junior) he finished third overall with 6,886 points, winning the javelin and high jump and placing second in the discus, pole vault and 1,500-meter run.

A native of McPherson, Kan., Henson graduated from Kansas State in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in human movement.

Henson and his wife, Cindy, have two sons, Quinton (14) and Pearson (11).
