BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's basketball team (16-7, 5-5 MW) rallied from 12 down in the second half to force overtime, but lost in heartbreaking fashion, 93-91, at Boise State on Saturday.
The loss snapped the Runnin’ Rebels’ two-game win streak.
Boise State (19-4, 9-2 MW) had five players score in double figures, led by Chandler Hutchison’s 21 points. He also had a game-high eight assists.
THE TURNING POINT: After Boise State used a 14-0 run to take a 12-point lead at 65-53 with just under 12 minutes left in the game, UNLV fought back to cut Boise State’s lead to just three with six minutes to go after a 15-6 run.
FORCING OVERTIME: Juiston made his second 3-pointer of the season with 20 seconds left in regulation to cut Boise State’s lead to one point at 81-80. After Boise State’s Lexus Williams made one of two free throws, Johnson was fouled and made both of his shots from the charity stripe with 12.6 seconds remaining. Hutchison then missed an eight-foot baseline jumper sending the game to overtime. UNLV closed regulation with a 12-4 run.
IN OVERTIME: Down two, 93-91, with six seconds left in overtime, Johnson drove the lane but missed a reverse layup and McCoy’s tip attempt at the buzzer didn’t go. McCoy scored seven of UNLV’s nine overtime points.
RUNNIN' REBEL OF THE GAME: McCoy was 9 of 15 from the field, including a 3-pointer. He made all five of his free-throw attempts and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. He also blocked two shots.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV led by one at halftime after making 61.5 percent of its shots in the first half (16 of 26).
QUOTABLE:“There was an energy in the building and it was an exciting place to play. It was a fun game to coach. Proud of my guys and proud of their fight. We showed an improvement and that’s what we have to keep doing. We stayed together and trusted each other. NOTES: - Four of UNLV’s last six games at Boise State have gone to overtime. - It was the fourth overtime game of the season for UNLV (1-3). - UNLV scored 90 or more points for the ninth time this season. - UNLV shot 50 percent or better for the 15th time this season. - UNLV shot a season-high 91.3 percent from the free-throw line (21 of 23). Johnson was 12 of 13. - Boise State made a UNLV-opponent season-high 13 3-pointers. - There were 12 lead changes and eight ties throughout the game. - UNLV has now made at least one 3-pointer in 1,029 straight games. - Boise State won both regular-season games vs. UNLV this season, also winning 83-74 in Las Vegas on Dec. 30.
