Texas-El Paso Beats UNLV 62-50

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Sharif Fajardo had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Texas-El Paso's stifling defense overpowered cold-shooting Nevada-Las Vegas in a 62-50 victory Saturday.

The Miners, already leading 34-27 at the half, opened the second half with an 8-4 run to go up 42-31 and never lost control, thanks largely to a defensive effort that held the Rebels (8-7, 1-2 Western Athletic) to 33-percent shooting.

UTEP (11-4, 2-2 WAC) managed to shoot only 37 percent from the field, but were helped along by rampant UNLV fouls. The Miners hit 23 of 36 free throws (63 percent) to ice the victory.

Will Smith contributed 10 points, all in the second half, and was the only other Miners player in double digits.

The Rebels were paced by Keon Clark's 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tyrone Nesby added 11 points for UNLV.
