Moser Honor Ties Him With LJ

Mike Moser earned his fourth MW Player of the Week award.

Feb. 13, 2012

LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV sophomore Mike Moser has been named the Mountain West Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games through February 12, the league announced Monday. This is the fourth weekly accolade for Moser and the sixth of the season for a Runnin' Rebel overall.

UNLV's sixth player of the week award in 2011-12 tied the school's single-season record. The only other time the Runnin' Rebels earned at least six conference weekly awards in a season was during their storied 1990-91 undefeated regular-season campaign. Moser's win also tied the program's single-season individual record for such honors as legendary All-American forward Larry Johnson collected four during the 1990-91 season en route to being named college basketball's national player of the year.

Moser, a 6-8 forward from Portland, Ore., led No. 11 UNLV to a 65-63 win over No. 13/15 San Diego State in front of a sold-out crowd of 18,577 at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday. The victory in UNLV's only game of last week moved the Runnin' Rebels into a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain West and snapped a six-game losing streak to the Aztecs.

Moser scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds against the Aztecs, while also recording career highs with six steals and four blocks. He also contributed two assists as he played a team-high 36 minutes.

Moser's four blocks tied the UNLV season high for an individual in a game this year, while his six steals were a season high for a Runnin' Rebel individual. But it was his last steal that was most noteworthy as it led to Anthony Marshall's game-winning finger roll on a fast break with 37 seconds to play. SDSU led 63-62 and had possession when Moser stripped Aztec Xavier Thames on a drive into the lane and the ball went to Marshall, who went the other way for the breakaway score.

The win was UNLV's 13th in its last 15 games. The two losses over that span were by a combined four points.

The Runnin' Rebels will play at TCU on Tuesday and at New Mexico on Saturday. Tuesday's game will be televised by The Mtn., at 4:30 p.m. PST, while Saturday's will be seen on CBS at 10 a.m. PST.
