LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball forward Brandon McCoy was selected as the Mountain West's Freshman of the Year as the league announced its all-conference awards on Tuesday. The MW's 11 head coaches voted on the conference awards.
In addition, McCoy and Runnin' Rebel junior forward Shakur Juiston were both named Second-Team All-MW, while senior guard Jordan Johnson was honorable mention by the media. The media also recognized McCoy as the Freshman of the Year and McCoy and Juiston as second-team honorees.
McCoy is UNLV's seventh league Freshman of the Year and first since Rashad Vaughn won the award in 2015. The all-conference honors only take league games into consideration. McCoy averaged 15.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game (2nd in MW) over the 18-game MW season. He shot 51.6 percent from the field and recorded 1.7 blocks per game. He scored in double figures in 13 games and had 10 or more rebounds on eight occasions.
Juiston had averages of 13.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game (3rd in MW) during league play. He led the MW in field-goal percentage at 62.0. Johnson scored 14.8 points per game and was second in the MW in assists with 5.4 per contest. He also was third in free-throw percentage at 86.7.
USBWA HONORS: The United States Basketball Writers Association also announced its all-district teams on Tuesday and McCoy is on the 10-member squad from District VIII, which includes the states of Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Montana. The USBWA release may be viewed here. For all games, McCoy leads the Runnin' Rebels in scoring with 16.9 ppg and rebounding at 10.2 rpg. He is on pace to set the Mountain West freshman scoring record and ranks fourth in the country in rebounding among freshmen. He has 16 double-doubles, which is 12th in the country and third among freshmen.
