LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 20 UNLV men's basketball team (25-7, 9-5 Mountain West) closed out the 2011-12 regular season on Saturday with a 74-63 home win over Wyoming to extend its win streak at the Thomas & Mack Center to 16 games, which ranks eighth in the nation. The Runnin' Rebels went undefeated at home this season for the first time in 20 years.
UNLV will now play in the 2012 Conoco Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship on Thursday, March 8, at 8:30 p.m., in the fourth quarterfinal game of the day, against Wyoming (20-10, 6-8). It will mark the fourth time that the Runnin' Rebels will face the same team in the opening round of the MW Tournament that they played during their last regular-season game. UNLV is 2-1 in such games. The Runnin' Rebels finished in third place in the league standings, one game out of first, and is the No. 3 seed in this week's conference tournament.
Thursday's game will be simulcast on both The Mtn., and CBS Sports Network with Ari Wolfe, Blaine Fowler and Molly Sullivan calling the action. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio broadcast, which may be heard live in Las Vegas on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM. The radio broadcast is also available at UNLVRebels.com through the subscription-based All-Access feature, while Gametracker is provided for free on the website.
Three of UNLV's seven losses this year are to teams that are currently ranked in both top-25 polls, with a fourth to a team receiving votes in both polls. The Runnin' Rebels are ranked for the 13th week this season (12 consecutive), their highest total number of weeks in the polls since 1992-93.
UNLV is 29-15 all-time against Wyoming, including 19-3 in Las Vegas and 15-2 at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Runnin' Rebels and the Cowboys split the season series this year, each winning on their home court. The Runnin' Rebels are 2-0 vs. Wyoming in MW Tournament play, winning a 2000 semifinal game and a 2005 quarterfinal contest. The Runnin' Rebels have won nine straight games over Wyoming at the Thomas & Mack Center.
