Bennett & Marshall Named USBWA All-District VIII

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball freshman forward Anthony Bennett and senior guard Anthony Marshall have been named to the 2012-13 United States Basketball Writers Association's All-District VIII Team, as voted by the association's national membership and announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Bennett, who on Monday was named to the Mountain West's first team and selected as the league's Freshman of the Year, has also been selected as a member of the Sporting News' All-Freshman Team. Other members of the five-player national squad included Kansas' Ben McLemore, UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad, Kentucky's Nerlens Noel and Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart (Freshman of the Year).
Bennett leads the Runnin' Rebels in scoring and rebounding with 15.9 ppg and 8.1 rpg this season. He is seventh in the Mountain West in scoring (first among freshmen) and is seventh nationally among all freshmen. His 10 double-doubles rank fourth in the country among freshmen.
Bennett scored in double figures in each of his first 17 collegiate games and has scored at least 10 points in 24 of UNLV's games. In addition, he has tallied 12 games with at least 20 points.
Marshall was also honored by the MW on Monday earning second-team All-MW honors and being named to the all-defensive team - both for the second straight year. He leads the team and the Mountain West in assists with 5.9 apg and is second on the team in scoring with 10.5 ppg. He has had games with seven of more assists 12 times this season, including a career-high 12 assists twice.
The other eight members of the All-District VIII squad are BYU's Brandon Davies, Colorado's Spencer Dinwiddie, BYU's Tyler Haws, Colorado State's Colton Iverson, New Mexico's Alex Kirk, Air Force's Michael Lyons, Colorado's Andre Roberson and New Mexico's Kendall Williams.
Roberson was named the District VIII Player of the Year, while New Mexico head coach Steve Alford won Coach of the Year honors.
District VIII includes the states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. There are nine regions.
UNLV, which finished the regular season with a 23-8 overall record and a 10-6 mark in conference play, is the No. 3 seed for this week's MW Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Runnin' Rebels will face No. 6 seed Air Force in a quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday, March 13 at 12 p.m.
