LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men’s basketball team will get an early start to the 2012-13 season later this summer as it prepares for its August foreign tour of Canada. The team’s trip north of the border will begin on Thursday, August 16, and the Runnin’ Rebels will play four exhibition games during their stay in Ottawa and Montreal before returning to Las Vegas on Wednesday, August 22.
Practices in preparation for the trip will begin on Saturday, August 4. All eligible roster players, including incoming freshmen will travel and be able to play in games on the trip. The only member of the team not able to play in Canada is Khem Birch, since he is not eligible until after the Fall 2012 semester because of his mid-year transfer.
“The Canada trip is a great opportunity for our program,” said head coach Dave Rice. “We will be able to utilize the four games and the 10 days of practice to gain experience for the upcoming season. We are looking forward to incorporating our newcomers with our returning players.”
In Ottawa, the team will stay at the Ottawa Marriott (100 Kent Street, Ottawa, KIP 5R7 – 613-238-1122) and will practice on Friday, August 17, play vs. Carleton University (location TBA) on Saturday, August 18, and play vs. University of Ottawa (location TBA) on Sunday, August 19, before heading to Montreal on Monday, August 20.
The accommodations in Montreal will be at the Marriott Chateau Champlain (1050 de la Gauchetiere West, Montreal, H3B 4C9 – 514-878-9000) with games scheduled for Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21. Opponents and locations for those two games are TBA.

In Rice’s first year leading the Runnin’ Rebels this past season, the team won 26 games, which are the most victories in a season by a first-year head coach in program history. He was one of only four first-year coaches in the country to guide his team to the NCAA Tournament, which was the program’s fifth appearance in the last six seasons.
The Runnin’ Rebels defeated three top-25 teams during the 2011-12 campaign, including a win over then-No. 1 North Carolina, which was the program’s first victory over the nation’s top-ranked team in 22 years and marked the first time a Mountain West school has ever defeated the No. 1 team in both polls.
UNLV won 20 games before the start of March this past season, which marked the first time since 1987 for the Runnin’ Rebels, and the team was ranked for 13 straight weeks (14 overall), climbing as high as No. 11 in the country. The team also recorded a perfect regular-season mark at home for the first time in 20 years, going 17-0 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
