June 8, 2017
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball freshman center Brandon McCoy has accepted an invitation to attend the 2017 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Cup Team training camp, USA Basketball announced Thursday.
McCoy is one of 28 of the nation's top 19-and-unders who will take part in the training camp, scheduled for June 18-25 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Commitee (chaired by Purdue head coach Matt Painter).
"This is a wonderful opportunity for Brandon to represent our country at a young age," UNLV head coach Marvin Menzies said. "There will be great competition there and the life experience he will gain is also valuable. We are thrilled for Brandon to have this opportunity." McCoy is a highly rated, 6-foot-11-inch, 245-pound forward from Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego. Originally from Chicago, he is a consensus five-star recruit and was rated as high as the nation's sixth-best prospect by ESPN.com. He was a McDonald's High School All-American, scoring 13 points with seven rebounds in this year's McDonald's High School All-American game, and was also named MVP of the Jordan Brand Classic.
This U19 squad will be coached by Kentucky's John Calipari, Colorado's Tad Boyle and Wake Forest's Danny Manning. To be eligible for the team, athletes must be 19 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1998) and be U.S. citizens.
The United States won both the 2013 and 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships. This year, the team will be looking for a third consecutive gold medal in Cairo, Egypt, July 1-9.
The 12-member team is expected to be announced June 22.
