LAS VEGAS -
UNLV men's basketball has announced the return of its "Tickets for Teachers" program for the upcoming 2009-10 season, and football has also adopted the program, to say "thank you" to local teachers.
Working with the Clark County School District's School-Community Partnership, the inaugural "Tickets for Teachers" program - launched prior to the 2008-09 basketball season - celebrated amazing success. The program provided two season tickets to every elementary and middle school in the district in which principals used to give to teachers as an incentive.
UNLV men's basketball and football programs, along with the CCSD's School-Community Partnership will team up again this year to provide tickets to all 274 schools.
"This is a simple way to tell teachers `thank you,'" said UNLV men's basketball head coach Lon Kruger, who also serves on the advisory board of the Clark County School District's School-Community Partnership. "It is a small way to recognize teachers, but has a big impact. The feedback we received from teachers was tremendous and we are looking forward to growing the program this year."
Tickets are provided through "angel" donations from community members. A school - two tickets - can be sponsored for $180 for the men's basketball season. Donors purchase tickets through the UNLV Athletics' ticketing department. (Preferred schools can be recommended by donors, however, the program's goal is to have all schools sponsored.) After the purchase, the ticketing department then facilitates the donation of the tickets to the Rebel Athletic Fund, which is in the name of the donor and is tax-deductible. (A gift receipt will be sent to the donor.) The RAF will then donate the tickets to the CCSD's School-Community Partnership to be distributed to the schools.
The same is true for football, however the special season ticket price, only available for this program, is $150 per school (two tickets).
"This program helps us say a big 'thank you' to deserving local teachers, something you don't hear enough of," UNLV football head coach Mike Sanford said.
"Because of all the generous donations during the 2008-09 school year, thousands of Clark County School District teachers were recognized," said Bridget Phillips, director of the Clark County School District's School-Community Partnership. "The CCSD School-Community Partnership Office received numerous calls from teachers stating how wonderful it was to have an evening out and how much they appreciated the tickets."
Renewal packets for last year's inaugural supporters of the program were sent out in the mail in late July. Those interested in more information on the program or supporting schools can contact Emily Eskin in the UNLV Athletics Ticketing Department at 702-895-1223 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
