LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men’s basketball program, in partnership with MGM Resorts International, 8 News NOW and the Clark County School District’s School-Community Partnership Program, has announced a new program recognizing outstanding local teachers – the MGM Resorts International Teacher of the Game Recognition program.
This past Tuesday at the Runnin' Rebels' first exhibition game against Grand Canyon, the first of 16 teachers was honored. One teacher will be recognized at each of the 15 other home games this season, honoring each teacher for their dedication and hard work with educating children.
“We’re thrilled to be part of a program that recognizes the people who directly affect our children’s lives,” said UNLV head coach Lon Kruger. “The partnership with MGM Resorts International, Channel 8 and the CCSD's School-Community Partnership will bring to light those teachers who are truly deserving of this recognition.”
A nomination program took place over the summer and early fall where anyone throughout the valley could nominate a teacher they thought was deserving. Representatives from each partner in this program then came together to select a Teacher of the Game for each of the 16 home games.
"The quality of teachers is so important because education is the backbone of our community," said MGM Resorts International Chairman and CEO Jim Murren. "MGM Resorts is pleased to give something back and say thank you to the teachers who make a difference in our childrens' lives.
Each Teacher of the Game will receive four tickets to a UNLV men's basketball game and be recognized at that game, a “Teacher of the Game” jersey, as well as dinner and show tickets for two to any MGM Resorts International Property.
The first teacher honored (Nov. 2) was Mrs. Paula Gehring – a kindergarten teacher from James Bilbray Elementary School. Click here to view the video honoring Mrs. Gehring on the Channel 8 News NOW website.
