LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's basketball program received another signed national letter of intent on Monday as Carlos Lopez will enroll at UNLV next fall and play for the Runnin' Rebels starting with the 2009-10 season, head coach Lon Kruger announced.
Lopez, a 6-foot, 11-inch, 210-pound senior forward from Findlay College Prep at the Henderson International School in Henderson, Nev., is originally from Lajas, Puerto Rico. He was ranked as the 83rd-best prospect in the class of 2009 by Hoop Scoop.
"Carlos has made unbelievable progress over the last three seasons at Findlay Prep," Kruger said. "Coach Peck and Coach Simon have done a terrific job leading his development. He has very good instincts for the game and is a skilled big man."
Lopez averaged 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds last year as the Pilots were 32-1 overall and lost in the prep school national championship game. A former teammate at Findlay Prep of current Runnin' Rebel Brice Massamba, Lopez shot 61 percent from the field in 2007-08.
"Carlos is one of a few guys we have had here over the past three years that I would label as having a high basketball IQ," said Mike Peck, head coach at Findlay Prep. "Having been with Coach Kruger, I know those are the kinds of players that thrive in his program. He can think the game and has a good feel and instinct for how to play. He understands quickly and he gets it, especially from a team-play perspective. He loves the game, is a gym rat and is very dedicated to continuing to improve his strength."
Lopez joins Justin Hawkins, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 170-pound guard from Taft High School in Woodland Hills, Calif., and Anthony Marshall, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 185-pound guard from Las Vegas' Mojave High School as UNLV's signings for the 2009-10 season.
