Moving sides of the ball last season was third-year assistant coach David Robinson, who now oversees UNLV's outside linebackers. The eldest son of John Robinson came aboard two years ago and spent 2002 coaching the Rebel tight ends, including starter DeJhown Mandley, who went on to sign with the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Robinson came to UNLV from Cal State Northridge, which discontinued its football program. There he served as defensive line coach for the Matadors for three seasons, including as associate head coach in 2001. "Dave brings extensive experience in college coaching," John Robinson said. "His credentials extend to schools in the Pac-10 and Big 10 conferences. He is an outstanding teacher and has a keen understanding of the concepts of the game." A 17-year coaching veteran of various levels, David Robinson started his career in 1986 as an assistant at St. Anthony's High School in Long Beach, Calif. He followed his father in 1987 to the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and served as a general assistant. A year later, he moved to UC Davis and coached linebackers for two seasons for the Div.-II Aggies before spending 1990 as a graduate assistant at the University of Michigan. Robinson then spent one season each at California, as a volunteer assistant, and College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif., before joining his father's staff at Southern California. He coached the Trojans' tight ends for three seasons (1993-95) and the linebackers for two (1996-97). He returned to College of the Desert for one season before joining head coach Jeff Kearin at Northridge in 1999. A tight end in college himself, Robinson, 41, was a two-year starter for Fullerton Junior College before transferring to play at Long Beach State in 1984-85. He earned his bachelor's degree from the school in 1987. He and wife, Arleen, were married on Feb. 28, 2004. In accordance with UCCSN and University policies, David Robinson's immediate supervisor is Senior Associate Athletic Director Jerry Koloskie, who reports directly to UNLV President Carol C. Harter regarding Robinson's employment. |
