LAS VEGAS - Practice got underway Tuesday for college football's newest postseason all-star event and former UNLV offensive lineman John Gianninoto is in his home state of Arizona preparing to compete in this weekend's Eastham Energy College All-Star Game.
Gianninoto, a 2006 graduate of Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, was a four-year letterman for the Rebels. In 2010 he started the first seven games of his senior season at left guard before returning to his familiar spot at center for the final six contests. He is listed as a left guard on the all-star game's official roster (http://www.easthamallstargame.com).
The inaugural Eastham Energy College Football All-Star Game will be played Sunday at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. PT and the game will be televised live by various Fox Sports Net channels, including Fox College Sports.
Gianninoto will be playing for the Stripes squad under head coach Joe Moglia, who was recently named president and head coach of the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. The Stars' head coach is Hal Mumme, the former University of Kentucky head coach who is now at NCAA Division III McMurry.
Among those involved in the charitable end of the all-star game is Jared Allen out of Idaho State and currently a defensive end with the Minnesota Vikings. Half of the ticket sale proceeds will go to Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money to build or modify homes so they are handicap accessible.
