Sanchez's First Rebel Class Announced|
Feb. 4, 2015
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - New football head coach Tony Sanchez announced his first UNLV recruiting class during Wednesday's initial day of the national signing period.
"I am really excited about this recruiting class and pleased with the way our staff handled things with only having three weeks on the road," Sanchez said. "The recruits and the coaches were very receptive and fired up for us to be here at UNLV. I think they really fell in love with this great city and university and responded to the energy and passion of this entire group."
The list of 22 future Rebels is made up of 17 high school players, four junior college players and one transfer from a four-year school. The group includes a trio of midyear JC signees but not the three grayshirts who signed previously and will be freshmen this fall.
"We won't have the luxury of sitting a lot of the guys -- a majority will have a chance to compete right away," Sanchez said. "Coming in with a new staff, everyone here has a clean slate and everyone is going to have to fight for their job. I think that's what the kids want and that's what they will respect - that nothing is going to be handed to them.
"How many JC players we bring in will vary year to year. It's all based on what we need to win. Every decision we make in this program will have nothing to do with people feeling comfortable but will have everything to do with winning football games. Bringing in guys who want to succeed in the classroom and fight on the field."
The class is nearly even with 12 players on defense and 10 on offense. The full breakdown is as follows: 6 DB, 5 DL, 4 OL, 2 WR, 2 RB, 2 QB and 1 LB.
"One of the things we really focused on was becoming faster and I believe that we got some guys that can run. At the same time, defensively, we got some guys that are really physical and will help us win ballgames."
The group consists of student-athletes whose hometowns are spread among seven states: eight are from California, four from Texas, three are out of Nevada, and two each hail from Arizona, Hawai'i and Washington, while one is originally from Illinois but played his JC ball in California.
"We recruited the kids that we wanted to recruit, regardless of what other schools were involved. We went out and attacked our list and we got the overwhelming majority of them to sign with UNLV. We have three locals coming in (including a transfer) and more importantly, identified some really great kids in Southern Nevada for next year and already have seven offers out there for the Class of 2016. Because of the lateness getting in we recruited in a much wider area than we normally would. We looked at some guys across the country but moving forward we really want to make our home base Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Washington and also the Houston area, where we obviously had a lot of success this year. We feel like we can fill our roster successfully with kids from those areas.
"Overall, I think it's a fantastic class. People say we did a great job in a short amount of time. But no matter how much time we could have had, I don't know if we would have recruited anybody different than this group of kids."
UNLV will hold its spring practice at Rebel Park from March 16-April 18.
