LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - With spring practice starting next week, UNLV filled the only opening on its football staff on Thursday as head coach Bobby Hauck announced the hiring of Robin Ross as linebackers coach.

"Robin is a good man who I've known for years," Hauck said. "He brings both a wealth of experience in this game and a good background in our specific defensive scheme, which will allow him to get off to a fast start with spring ball starting next week."

Ross just finished his second year as tight ends coach as a graduate assistant at Oregon State after having spent the previous three seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II Western Washington University before that institution eliminated its football program after the 2008 season.

Ross is a veteran of the Pac-10 Conference, having coached at Washington State, Oregon and Oregon State during his career. On the Rebel staff he replaces Brent Guy, who left last month to become defensive coordinator at the University of Tulsa.

Ross began his coaching career at Long Beach State and made stops that included Cincinnati, Washington State, Iowa State, Fresno State and Oregon before he spent two seasons coaching in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders, including the 2000 AFC West Championship squad. He later returned to Oregon and then OSU before taking over as head coach at WWU. In the program's final season, he led the Vikings to a spot in the postseason for the first time since 1999.

Ross received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Washington State in 1977. He played at Rio Hondo Community College in Whittier, Calif., before transferring to WSU where he earned second team All-Pac-8 honors and became a 10th round draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers in 1976.
