2018 UNLV SCHEDULE @UNLVFOOTBALL BUY SEASON TICKETS!
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV football team will open at USC and close its six-game home schedule with in-state rival UNR as the 2018 conference schedule was released Thursday by the Mountain West.
Under fourth-year head coach Tony Sanchez, the Rebels will kick off the season by heading to Los Angeles' famed Coliseum for just the second time when they take on the Trojans September 1 in the first meeting between the programs since 1997.
In their home opener, the Rebels will renew a rivalry with UTEP September 8 at Sam Boyd Stadium. The two schools played each other seven times between 1978 and 1993 and UNLV leads the all-time series against the Miners 5-2.
The following week, UNLV will enjoy back-to-back home games for the only time this fall starting by hosting a second consecutive team from Texas, FCS-member Prairie View A&M. The programs have met just once before when the Rebels downed the Panthers 63-28 in 1974.
The non-conference portion of the slate concludes September 22 when UNLV plays at Arkansas State for the first time. The Rebels and Red Wolves have only met once as UNLV won 28-23 in Las Vegas when both were members of the old Big West Conference in 1995.
After the season's lone open week, New Mexico comes to Sam Boyd Stadium to begin Mountain West play October 6. A trip to Utah State is scheduled for October 13 before Air Force comes to town a week later. UNLV will play California opponents the next three weeks starting with a trip to San Jose State October 27. Defending MW West Division champion Fresno State, who UNLV defeated on the road last season, comes to town November 3 before the Rebels visit San Diego State November 10.
The road finale is scheduled for November 17 when UNLV heads to Honolulu to take on Hawai'i in the second edition of the Ninth Island Showdown sponsored by The California Hotel. The Rebels took home the unique golden pineapple trophy in its debut game last fall.
The regular season ends Thanksgiving weekend when UNR comes to Las Vegas November 24 in the 42nd edition of the Battle for the Fremont Cannon, which is also part of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold.
"This is a good schedule that I think sets up nicely for us," said Sanchez. "Our season really groups into three phases this year. We have all of the non-conference games followed by our bye week, then our three crossover games with the Mountain Division, and finally five straight games vs. the other teams in our West Division.
"We are looking forward to opening the season at USC, which is in an area we heavily recruit and we expect a big Rebel contingent in the stands. We are also excited about our six home games, starting with UTEP in the opener -- and you always like to end the regular season at home in front a big crowd against your in-state rival."
New football season tickets are on sale now and fans can select their exact seat location online for the 2018 season with the "Pick-Your-Own-Seat" feature. Current Rebel Football season ticket holders will have first priority on seats in the new Las Vegas Stadium, anticipated to open for the 2020 season.
Also still available through March 31, fans who renew or buy new season tickets will be entered for a chance to win a gift or special Rebel experience as part of "Win With the Rebels -- 60 Days of Rebel Gifts." The earlier you renew, the more chances you have to win. To renew or buy, visit UNLVtickets.com or call 702-739-FANS (3267).
Thursday's announcement represents the first phase in the 2018 football schedule process. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports Network and ESPN will now initiate a selection procedure that will also include the shifting of particular games to Thursdays and Fridays. That will be followed by the identification of national network outlets and kick times, along with the picks for regional partner AT&T SportsNet, Stadium and Spectrum Sports (Hawaii).
UNLV opens its spring practice schedule Tuesday at Rebel Park on campus. The annual Spring Showcase, which is free and open to the public, is set for Saturday, April 14 starting at noon.
