Spring Ball Open For Business

March 6, 2018

The fourth spring practice for UNLV Football under head coach Tony Sanchez opened under blue skies and cool air at sun-drenched Rebel Park Tuesday morning.

The first of 15 spring sessions ran for over two hours and included 84 players in helmets and shorts.

"Fired up," said Sanchez to open his comments to the media following Day 1. "Good to be back out here. I tell you what -- it sure comes quickly and I felt the guys did a good job coming out and putting in a good day's practice."

"Offensively, we had some new guys out there -- (Max) Gilliam and (Kenyon) Oblad -- getting comfortable running the offense and I think Armani (Rogers) looked good today. Defensively, we're getting settled in with (new defensive coordinator Tim Skipper) coming in with new terminology. We did a good job lining up and flying around."

New quarterback Kenyon Oblad (6-3, 185, FR-HS) was originally supposed to be in class at Liberty High School today but instead became the first early high school graduate to join the Rebel football team. Oblad, who earned his diploma in December, has been a UNLV student since the semester started in January and the highly touted recruit got lots of attention from the local media on-hand Tuesday.

Oblad finished his prep career as Nevada's all-time leading passer with 11,828 yards, completing 718 of 1,220 career attempts with 116 touchdown passes for the nationally ranked Patriots.

His new head coach said coming in early will help the young signal-caller over his career.

"Being here now means he'll come into camp (this fall) with six months of being a college kid under his belt -- both as a player and academically," said Sanchez. "He'll be familiar with the system and these 15 practices will put him ahead of players in high school."

UNLV is scheduled to work out in the morning each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for approximately two hours for three weeks before the university's spring break. After returning to campus, there is another week and then a final week of sessions set for Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday.

All practices are open to the public but viewing areas are restricted and no use of mobile communication devices will be allowed while at Rebel Park. Please note that dates, times and dress are subject to change.

The public is invited to attend the FREE family-friendly Spring Showcase April 14, which will kick off at noon and be held on campus at UNLV's soccer complex at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

New football season tickets are on sale now and fans can select their exact seat location online for the 2018 season with the "Pick-Your-Own-Seat" feature. Current Rebel Football season ticket holders will have first priority on seats in the new Las Vegas Stadium, anticipated to open for the 2020 season.

Also still available through March 31, fans who renew or buy new season tickets will be entered for a chance to win a gift or special Rebel experience as part of "Win With the Rebels -- 60 Days of Rebel Gifts." The earlier you renew, the more chances you have to win. To renew or buy, visit or call 702-739-FANS (3267).
