2010 Schedule Released|
March 29, 2010
LAS VEGAS - For the first time in school history the UNLV football team will play 13 regular-season games, including a record nine vs. opponents coming off bowl trips, as the Mountain West Conference released its complete 2010 schedule Monday.
The expanded schedule is allowed per NCAA rules whenever a school plays at Hawaii. UNLV has played 13 games just three times before but all of those campaigns included either a postseason NCAA playoff game (1974) or bowl appearance (1984 and 2000).
Five of the nine bowl teams will be coming to face first-year head coach Bobby Hauck's Rebels at Sam Boyd Stadium, starting with an always-popular visit from Big Ten Conference power Wisconsin to kick things off Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. This will mark the ninth all-time meeting between the intersectional schools and Wisconsin leads the series 6-2. The three largest home crowds in school history all came vs. the Badgers, including the UW's most-recent game here in 2007.
"The schedule has a nice mix of home and away games throughout the season, and both the non-conference and the Mountain West Conference schedules should be exciting," Hauck said. "Having the bye week right in the middle of the season is also a positive."
UNLV will open its 12th season of Mountain West Conference play the following Saturday with a trip to Utah at 1:00 p.m. PT. The Rebels stay on the road for their first visit to face Idaho in Moscow since 1977 in what completes a two-game series that began with the Vandals coming to Las Vegas in 2005. UNLV leads the all-time series between the schools 3-2.
Hauck will coach his first MWC home game on Sept. 25 against New Mexico at 7 p.m. before his team plays a pair of non-conference contests. The 36th Battle for the Fremont Cannon will be waged in Las Vegas when Nevada, Reno hits town on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. One week later, UNLV will make a rare cross-country trip for a first-ever meeting with traditional power West Virginia on Oct. 9 at a time to be announced. The game will also mark the first time the Rebels will play a team from the Big East Conference. UNLV last played in the Eastern Time Zone on Sept. 5, 2004, at Tennessee.
After a trip to Colorado State on Oct. 16 at 11:00 a.m. PT, the Rebels will enjoy their lone off-week of the extended season on Oct. 23. Defending MWC champion TCU comes to town Oct. 30 at 8:00 p.m. before UNLV heads to BYU on Nov. 6 at 11:00 a.m. PT. Wyoming will play at Sam Boyd Stadium on Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. PT, and then just five days later the Rebels close their home schedule with their only non-Saturday game of the season, vs. Air Force on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. It will mark the first non-Saturday game for UNLV since a Thursday meeting with Wyoming on Nov. 13, 2008.
The MWC slate ends with a Thanksgiving weekend trip to San Diego State on Nov. 27 at 5:00 p.m. PT, and then Hauck's team closes the regular season with the trip to Hawaii on Dec. 4 at a time to be announced.
No less than 10 of 13 Rebel games are already scheduled to be televised this fall. The Wisconsin game will mark UNLV's only appearance on VERSUS (Cox Digital Channel 67/DIRECTTV Channel 603/DISH 151) while the TCU and Air Force games will be shown by CBS College Sports Network (Cox Digital Channel 333/DIRECTV Channel 613/DISH 152). Seven games will be shown by The Mtn. HD - MountainWest Sports Network, which is available nationally on DIRECTV Channel 616 (Cox Digital Channel 334). TV plans for games vs. Idaho, West Virginia and Hawaii are still to be determined.
Season tickets are on sale now with the full six-game package currently only available to current Nevada residents as well as UNLV alumni and donors. The full season is priced at $100 apiece for each end zone seat and only $185 (not including RAF donation) for sideline seating. Payment plans are available.
