Scrimmage Is Football Fun Under The Sun|
March 30, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV football team waited for the hottest day of the year so far to stage its first scrimmage of 2012 and put on an entertaining spring practice of approximately 80 plays Friday afternoon at a super sunny Rebel Park.
All four of the squad's quarterbacks saw time under center and it couldn't have started any better for veteran Caleb Herring (Moreno Valley, Calif.) as the first play of the day saw him get the ball to running back Tim Cornett (Galena Park, Texas) who took it 50 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Herring soon was on the sidelines cheering on his teammates as the bulk of work was handled by redshirt freshman Nick Sherry (Petaluma, Calif.) and JC transfer James Boyd (Los Angeles) as well as returning senior Sean Reilly(Trabuco Canyon, Calif.).
There was plenty of scoring in the high-energy outing, including one on defense as redshirt freshman DB Peni Vea (Kailu-Kona, Hawai'i) turned in perhaps the play of the day by stealing a potential reception out of the hands of rookie tight end Jake Phillips(Lakewood, Calif.). Vea grabbed the ball, quickly turned and raced 50 yards the other direction for the touchdown. Phillips soon bounced back, however, by turning in the grab of the day when he went up high and one-handed a 29-yard pass from Reilly down to the one-yard line (see the photo gallery on this page for a look).
Other scoring plays on Friday:
--52-yard touchdown reception (caught at the five-yard line) by Jonathon James(Las Vegas) thrown by Boyd
--Five-yard scoring sweep by junior-to-be RB Bradley Randle(Murrieta, Calif.)
--Cornett short-yardage rush into the end zone
--Short touchdown reception by James again thrown by Boyd
--Five-yard touchdown pass to Maika Mataele(Kaneohe, Hawai'i) thrown by Boyd
--30-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Spencer(Las Vegas) thrown by Reilly
--30-yard touchdown pass to Jordan thrown by Reilly
--40-yard rushing touchdown right up the gut by Randle
--25-yard rushing score around end by Eric Johnson (Green Cove Springs, Fla.)
The scrimmage officially ended the third week of spring practice as the team headed off to enjoy spring break. The Rebels' next practice is scheduled for Monday April 9 at 3:45 pm at Rebel Park.
Head Coach Bobby Haucksaid he and his staff were anxious to review the video.
"We looked pretty good today and came out pretty healthy, which is what you want," said Hauck. "We got a bunch of plays in and the guys were physical and fairly spirited out there."
Hauck was asked what he told the team before they broke for an off-week.
"I told them it was a good first 3/5 of spring practice and we need six solid practices when we get back. I also said to enjoy the time off but be smart and take care of each other over spring break."
