Hundley Ready To Help Rebels Reach Next Level

Linebackers coach Tim Hundley enters his first year at UNLV.

April 11, 2012

LAS VEGAS ( - Veteran defensive coach Tim Hundley joined the UNLV football staff on March 6, less than one week before the start of spring practice. Just over a month on the job with the Rebels, coach Hundley sat down to talk about what the transition has been like for him, his outlook on the linebackers and what he looks forward to at UNLV.

Coach Hundley most recently spent three years coaching the secondary at UCLA. Prior to working with the Bruins, Hundley spent time at UTEP as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach as well as Washington, Colorado, Oregon State, Nevada, Reno and Idaho.

How has the transition been so far?
It’s football everywhere. I enjoyed the guys where I was three months ago and equally as well here at UNLV. I enjoy Coach Hauck’s tempo and the staff has been great. I think we have willing players that are anxious to buy in and get to their highest levels and that’s really what we need to have them do.

What's your assesment of the linbacking corps so far?
I think there is some real athleticism there and some guys who are physical and can help us win some football games. We’re trying to develop enough depth to sustain things that happen during the season. We need to be five inside guys and a couple outside and we’re getting there, just need to keep working hard every chance we have out on the field.

How important is spring practice to you with it being your first at UNLV?
It’s important to get familiar with the guys personalities. Important for them to get to know the tempo that we require to have success. Without spring ball you can’t really get those little discipline factors and attitude factors drilled in, you can’t get those established. It’s great to be able to get things like that done now so we can focus on football come fall.

What are you looking forward to this season?
I like to be a part of turning the program around. I’m not the answer, but I’m part of it. Everywhere I’ve been I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to see if we can get our football team to play at a championship level and I’m looking forward to doing that here with a great coaching staff and group of guys. We have a head coach that’s really motivated to get that done, so I’m really glad to be a part of that.

How was your spring break?
I went back to L.A. and down to Tucson for a bit and had the chance to get to opening day to watch my son play. It's always special to be able to get out there and watch your kids and opening day makes it even better. (Coach Hundley's son is a former University of Arizona standout and current catcher with the San Diego Padres organization)
