Asiata Now A Bear Blocker
April 27, 2009
LAS VEGAS - Former UNLV offensive lineman Johan Asiata (pronounced "YO-han AH-c-AH-tah") has signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Bears as part of a nine-man group of undrafted players to ink a deal with the NFL team.
Asiata earned honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference in 2008 after starting all 12 games along the Rebel line for the second consecutive season. Asiata, who played 11 games at left guard and one at right tackle, did not allow a sack as a senior.
A native of New Zealand, Asiata graduated from the Youth Challenge Academy in Hawaii but did not play football until attending Yuba College in Marysville, Calif. After junior college, he signed with Mike Sanford's Rebels and redshirted his first year on campus in 2006 before becoming a two-year starter.
