LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior wide receiver Devante Davis is one of just 77 players in the nation named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which was released by the Maxwell Football Club Monday.

The award is given to college football's top player at the end of each season.

Davis (6-3, 200) was a unanimous choice for Preseason First Team All-Mountain West by Lindy's, Athlon and Phil Steele's preview publications. He is the nation's top returning touchdown catcher after grabbing 14 in 2013, which shattered UNLV's single-season record. Lindy's also named him the league's "Top Deep Threat" after a junior season that saw him finish with 87 receptions for 1,290 yards.

A native of the Houston area, Davis' 2,144 combined yards in 2012-13 made him the first player in school history to go over 2,000 yards through the air in a two-season span.

The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron won last year's award. The watch list candidates were chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, which analyzes both past performance and future potential. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, FBS head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 3. From that group, three finalists will be announced November 24 and the winner of the 2014 Maxwell Award will be announced December 11 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The formal presentation of the award will take place during an annual banquet in Atlantic City, N.J., on March 6, 2015.

Organizers for college football's top honor for Davis' position of wide receiver, the Biletnikoff Award, are scheduled to announce their watch list on July 15.
