LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Day One of Camp UNLV is in the books as the team went through a nearly three-hour practice at Rebel Park on a beautiful Tuesday morning.
After gone through two days of meetings and housekeeping since reporting Sunday, more than 100 players were on hand wearing shorts and helmets. The team will keep that same schedule through Friday before heading north to Ely for two-a-days.
Heading into his fourth season leading the program, head coach Bobby Hauckwas pleased with what he saw Tuesday.
"It was pretty sharp out there for a first day but it needs to be better," Hauck said. "Certainly, everyone is excited to be out here. There is a lot of optimism on our team. It's a different feeling finally having a lot of guys that have done it before. We have pretty good depth for the first time. I like what's going on."
REBEL RED REDUX Something looked very different at Camp UNLV on Tuesday. Black and gray were out and Rebel Red was back in as the players sported new bright red shorts and white and red shoes on the practice field. The new look actually takes the Rebels back a bit as Director of Athletic Equipment Paul Pucciarelli said this is the first time the team is pulling on red shoes and shorts since the days of head coach John Robinson(1999-2004).
"It's good to change things up sometimes," Hauck said after practice. "I think they looked good!"
FULLBACK FALLOUT: One player not practicing is William Vea(Alamo, NV). The two-time letterman at fullback would have been a junior this fall but nagging injuries have him headed toward a medical disqualification instead. Hauck said Vea will remain on scholarship.
With Vea's exit, senior Max Johnson(Wildomar, CA) steps to the front as the primary fullback. Johnson has played at H-back and tight end as well since walking on to the team out of Elsinore High School. Last year he caught five passes for 13 yards and two touchdowns. He has moved from No. 83 to No. 37 for the 2013 campaign.
NEXT UP:The team is back practicing at Ernie Becker Sr. Football Fields at Bill "Wildcat" Morris Rebel Park on Wednesday. Practices are open to the public in limited viewing areas. Fans are invited to attend but please note that the use of cell phones or other mobile communication devices is not allowed while at Rebel Park.
The Rebels open the 2013 season by traveling to Minnesota on Thursday, Aug. 29. The seven-game home schedule begins with a first-ever hosting of Arizona on Saturday, Sept. 7. Season tickets are available now by calling 739-FANS (3267) or logging on to unlvrebels.com.
