Packing It Up
Aug. 8, 2008
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV football team wrapped up the first week of its preseason work by putting on full pads for the first time at Rebel Park Friday.
Only one, 22-period, morning practice and now the entire football traveling party will pack it up and move up north from Aug. 9-19 at an off-campus training site. That means not just the players and coaches but the athletic trainers, managers, equipment staff and sports information personnel are all headed out of town for a while for the third straight season under head coach Mike Sanford.
The last hurrah on campus was a lively effort under a hot sun and attracted some fans in what was the final practice of 2008 that was open to the public.
"We had a nice little breeze, which was refreshing," Sanford said after doing a battery of post-practice interviews with the large gathering of media. "I like the way we worked today, the work ethic, the attitude was strong. We just went out and performed like a football team that likes being on the field. Now, we're looking forward to a visit to a destination in the state of Nevada where we will improve as a football team."
Redshirt freshman Austin Harrington (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine HS), who left Wednesday's practice with a leg injury, later found out he had suffered a broken fibula. He will wear a protective boot for 2-3 weeks and will most likely be out of live action for 4-5 weeks. Harrington, who practiced as a defensive end in 2007, had made the move over to vie for time at UNLV's tight end spot this fall.
Another young tight end, true freshman Alex Young (Hughson, CA/Central Catholic HS) sat out again on Friday with a bruised AC joint but is expected to be back by Sunday's practice after Saturday's travel day.
TIGHT END, PART III
UNLV did add a tight end candidate on Friday as sophomore junior-college transfer Kyle Watkins (Phoenix, AZ/Cactus Shadows HS) pulled on a silver helmet for the first time. The 6-2, 250-pound Arizona native spent last season at Scottsdale Community College and will look to challenge for immediate playing time.
The Rebels will leave for their off-campus training site on Saturday morning and not return to Las Vegas until Tuesday, Aug. 19. The squad's regular practice schedule kicks in on Monday, Aug. 25 leading up to the season opener vs. Utah State on Aug. 30. Kickoff with the Aggies is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are now on sale by calling 729-FANS or logging on to unlvrebels.com.
