We Love The 80s!

Aug. 8, 2010

LAS VEGAS ( - Day Two of Camp Rebel brought temperatures well below normal as the team's morning session started in the high 70s and finished three hours later in the low 80s while a nice breeze helped offset the strong sun.

Head coach Bobby Hauck said the relatively cool conditions may have helped his team's efforts as the players spent a second consecutive day in shorts and helmets.

"It was great weather out here today, that's for sure," Hauck said. "We had a good, solid practice. We're still not in pads, so it's a lot of teaching. The competitive part of it kicks in when the pads come on."

UNLV returns to Rebel Park Monday starting at 8 a.m. and will now at least bring shoulder pads into the mix while the acclimation period progresses. Like all UNLV practices under Hauck, it will be open to the public (with limited viewing areas).

Two former Rebel lettermen were on hand for Sunday's drills and had the special excitement of watching their sons suit up for their alma mater.

Bob Rather, who lettered for the school as a linebacker in 1977-78, saw his son, Brett, work out with the tight ends/fullbacks. The younger Rather, who graduated from Henderson's Green Valley High School and is also an NCAA champion boxer, converted from linebacker after spring practice.

Keith Kohorst, who lettered as an offensive lineman in 1981-82, saw his his son, Nolan, punt and kick field goals at Rebel Park. The younger Kohorst is also a local product from Green Valley HS and is expected to compete for both jobs for Hauck this fall.

The first scholarship place-kicker signed by UNLV since former Rebel great Sergio Aguayo in 2003, Nolan was ranked the No. 9 PK prospect in the nation after being named the PK on the Las Vegas Sun's All-Decade Team.
