Camp Notes: News About Numbers
Aug. 8, 2012
UNLVRebels.com (UNLVRebels.com) - With Las Vegas temperatures already threatening to reach triple digits by morning, the UNLV football team returned to Rebel Park on Wednesday for its second preseason practice. Still dressed in shirts and helmets, the squad went for three sun-baked hours before breaking for lunch.
The team will add shoulder pads to its gear for Thursday and Friday before going full-pads on Saturday. UNLV leaves for its annual trip to Ely on Sunday before returning to campus on Aug. 22. The season opens Thursday, Aug. 30 when the Rebels host Minnesota starting at 8 p.m. PT.
NEW LIDS FOR THE KIDS
The nearly 100 players in camp are turning heads of onlookers as they debut the team's new helmet color, which features a gray base instead of the shiny silver look that has dominated for three decades. While the new white-based UNLV arch and triple striping won't be added until game time, the new practice hats are getting solid reviews from players.
"I really like the new helmets," said senior offensive lineman Doug Zismann. "The structural design of them is the same ones we have been using but I really like the new aesthetic design of it. The gray facemask and gray helmet are really going to go nice together."
THE NUMBERS GAME
Fans may also notice a change at the top of the team's numerical roster this season as no Rebel will be wearing jersey No. 1. And that's also by design.
Said Hauck: "Some of the great coaches I have been around, including (former longtime UCLA head man) Terry Donahue, who was a great mentor for me, thought that No. 1 signified someone who was bigger than the program or the other guys on the team. So we aren't real big on guys wearing No. 1."
Veteran cornerback Will Chandler was the man wearing No. 1 when Hauck was hired and the former Montana head coach allowed Chandler to finish out his Rebel career in the number last fall before pulling it from the UNLV rotation.
Speaking of numbers, local player Connor Afoa is in a new one this week. The Henderson Foothill High School product grayshirted after signing in 2011, enrolled in UNLV in January and wore No. 59 as a linebacker during spring practice. However, the 6-0, 245 athlete has moved over to the other side of the ball and is now wearing jersey No. 38 as a fullback. He'll compete as a true freshman this fall.
Individual tickets for all seven of UNLV's 2012 home football games are now on sale, while season tickets for the Rebels are also still available.
