Camp Notes: Meet The GA's|
Aug. 9, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
The UNLV football team returned to Rebel Park for its third preseason practice. The biggest difference from the first two practices is that the players added their shoulder pads on Thursday. The Rebels practiced for three hours for the second consecutive day before breaking for lunch.
The team will practice with half-pads on Friday before going full-pads on Saturday. UNLV leaves for its annual trip to Ely on Sunday before returning to campus on Aug. 22. The season opens Thursday, Aug. 30 when the Rebels host Minnesota starting at 8 p.m. PT.
FINDING THE RIGHT HELP
When the Rebels reported for preseason practices, there were obviously many new players, as the freshmen moved to campus for the first time, but there were also some new coaching additions.
Staggs lettered four years for the Rebels and garnered honorable mention All-Mountain West as a senior in 2006. He earned his degree in sociology in 2007 and had stints with the Chicago Bears and in the CFL.
"Jay is a hard worker and a good guy," said head coach Bobby Hauck. "He is a quality individual and certainly will be a valuable member of the staff this fall."
Rider was a standout safety at Montana State and earned honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference honors in 2009 and 2010. He spent his senior season as a defensive captain and assisted the Bobcats last season.
"Mike is a good guy, and obviously he is a great guy because he came from Montana State," said Hauck, smiling. "Normally we wouldn't hire a guy from there but he is such a good guy that we actually brought him in."
Those two members join Ferriter who enters his third and final season as a GA with the Rebels. Ferriter played four seasons for Hauck at Montana before graduating in 2008. He had a remarkable career and was the 11th Griz to reach the 2,000 receiving yard mark in a career.
"Mike Ferriter has been with us for a long time, both as a player and a coach," said Hauck. "He has a bright future in coaching as well as the other two GA's."
GREAT WHITE NORTH DUO
Before 2011, UNLV hadnot had a Canadian on the roster since Andre Dubiellak lettered as a receiver in 2000-01. Now the Rebels have two. Joining the Rebels this fall is Tom Clarkson, a freshman out of Mission, British Columbia, Canada. Clarkson joins Brett Boyko as the Canadians on the roster this season, and like Boyko two seasons ago, Clarkson has had to adjust to the move.
"It's been a bit of adjustment, just adjusting to the climate and the heat," said Clarkson. "I don't really come from a hot environment."
Despite the heat, Clarkson feels at home with the Rebels because he does have a fellow Canuck on the team.
"Brett is a really good player and he has kind of taken me under his wing," said Clarkson. "It's comforting to have another Canadian on the team because when I was recruited by other schools they kind of just short-listed me because I was Canadian, but because UNLV already had a Canadian on the team they knew that guys from Canada can play football. They don't think we all just play hockey."
