VIDEO/STORY: #CampRebel: Hughes, Fao Leaders on the D-Line

Aug. 9, 2017

LAS VEGAS ( - The sun was shining on another pristine Las Vegas morning as the Rebels were in full pads for the second time during #CampRebel. The intensity was particularly cranked up in the team drills with both sides of the ball taking advantage of the opportunity to be physical with full gear on.

The offense and the defense traded highlights throughout the day, but it was the last segment of the practice that saw possibly the top play of camp so far. With redshirt freshman Armani Rogers and the number one offense facing the number one defense, Rogers took the snap and had the defensive line bearing down quickly. Moving to his left, he avoided the rush and launched the ball to a streaking Devonte Boyd, who caught it in stride for a 50-yard touchdown.

While Rogers' moves allowed him to escape in that instance, it wasn't the first time this camp the defensive line has gotten some push up front. The group, led by seniors Mike Hughes Jr. and Jason "Pops" Fao, was one of the top positions coming out of spring, according to head coach Tony Sanchez.

Sanchez's defensive line coach Tony Samuel also likes what he sees from Hughes and Fao at camp.

"Mike Hughes, of course, is doing a great job," said Samuel. "Jason Fao, we call him Pops, has been doing a great job since spring and he's continuing to do that here."

Samuel also praised fellow senior Mark Finau for his work in camp and the intensity he has been bringing to each practice.

Overall, the focus over the next week for Samuel and the defensive staff is establishing depth at the position.

"We've got five seniors and a couple young guys coming up," said Samuel. "Right now, we are about a week away from establishing the depth chart and getting guys in the positions where they will play for the season."
