Camp Notes: Hodge Next In Line|
Aug. 10, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Rebels continued their training in extreme temperatures Friday with a morning session that lasted nearly three hours. The squad will go full-pads on Saturday for its last practice before leaving for Ely on Sunday. As with all preseason practices, the public is invited to attend at Rebel Park on campus.
PHILIPPI THE FATHER One visitor at Friday's practice certainly knew his way around the place as former UNLV strength and conditioning coach Mark Philippi dropped by to see how his son was doing during camp. Marc Philippi (5-11, 210) is a true freshman defender out of Bishop Gorman High School and grew up around the Rebel program as his father worked at the school from 1993-2005. One of the world's top powerlifters, Mark Philippi competed in multiple Strongest Man competitions on ESPN, earning the title America's Strongest Man in 1997. He now runs the Philippi Sports Institute in Las Vegas.
BATTLE BORN JERSEY TURNS 3
Head Coach Bobby Hauck began a new tradition at UNLV in 2010 with the introduction of the "Battle Born Jersey No. 36." In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state to enter the union, and the state's official slogan, which appears on the state flag, is "Battle Born," reflecting the state's entry on the Union side during the American Civil War. Rebel Football Jersey No. 36 -- complete with a patch on the back of the state flag -- will be worn by a Nevadan who best exemplifies the Battle Born spirit of his state and the toughness and pride of Rebel Football.
The inaugural recipient was senior linebacker Ronnie Paulo, who turned in his No. 56 just before the season. In 2011, another senior LB from Las Vegas took over the honored number as Nate Carter switched from his usual 55. This year's honoree is junior cornerback Sidney Hodge out of Palo Verde High School who wore No. 23 his first two years on campus. The only returning starter in the secondary, Hodge tied for fourth in the nation last fall with four fumble recoveries and ranked fifth the Mountain West with eight pass breakups.
Hodge, who is the first non-senior to earn the honor, told us Friday that he has great respect for the honor.
"All my family and former coaches encouraged me when they heard that number 36 would be showing up on my chest, so it means a lot," he says. "I watched Ronnie and then Nate wear 36 and those guys were both great leaders on the team so I'm going to try to live up to their standard."
Hauck says it's a big deal for Nevada products.
"We take great pride in the Nevada players in our program and the Battle Born jersey is a way to help celebrate the pride that is so prevalent in this state. Sidney is a player that personifies the toughness that we look for in players and he will be a great representative of this program's Silver State contingent."
