CAMP REBEL (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV football team suited up in half pads for the first time this preseason camp, resulting in more contact in a sun-filled morning session out at Rebel Park.

“It was fun to see the guys get out there and be able to make a little more contact with the shoulder pads on today,” said second-year head coach Bobby Hauck. “Today was a little more full go and it resulted in a good practice.”

Players were excited about the first opportunity for contact as an early group session with the offensive and defensive lines along with running backs and linebackers created some noise as the competition heated up.

1 ON 1

Following suit from the first two days of practice, the offensive and defensive lines’ one on one pass rush session drew the attention early on. Tyler Gaston got the defense riled up early after handedly winning his first two matchups. Gaston is coming off a freshman campaign in which he registered 13 total tackles, including three for a loss and a sack in eight games.

A QUARTERBACK’S BEST FRIEND

Throughout the seven-on-seven and team periods, quarterbacks Caleb Herring and Sean Reilly seemed to both often find tight ends Anthony Vidal and Austin Harrington. Vidal and Harrington combined for 30 catches and 270 yards last season in the Rebels’ passing game.

The team will continue its once-daily morning practices through the week. Saturday will mark the first day of full pads before the program shifts gears and makes its annual journey to an off-campus site for 11 days of practice that will include the battery of two-a-days.

The public is invited to attend all UNLV practices with limited viewing areas. Also, no cell phones or other mobile communication devices are to be used while inside Rebel Park.
