Camp Notes: D-Scoop On D-Line
Aug. 14, 2012
ELY, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - On a sunny and dry Tuesday in Ely, the UNLV football team held a single practice at Broadbent Park before breaking to dine on a spread that included salmon, au gratin potatoes and roasted pork. Now getting into a rhythm in this off-campus preseason setting, the Rebels will return to action Wednesday with a pair of practices.
FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE
Third-year defensive line coach Michael Gray likes the unit that is taking shape here in Ely. The big difference, of course, is in the numbers.
"Things have gone better this camp than in the previous two because we now have a lot better depth. We have a lot more guys in the rotation and that leads to more competition, which means fresher players and people working harder to earn the reps."
Those players are coming from all fronts - veterans, transfers and newbies.
"Our old guys are solid leaders - guys like Tyler Gaston, Beau Brence and Alex Klorman. (Midyear junior-college transfer) Parker Holloway has been awesome after having a spring practice here under his belt. (Former USC transfer) James Boyd is a little behind because he didn't get much time on defense during the spring (while he competed at quarterback) but he's working his way through it."
Also adjusting to the Division One level is big Mark Garrick. The 6-4, 275-pound rusher is from South Carolina, played his JC ball in Sacramento and was a recent addition to the Rebels after originally committing to play at Syracuse.
"We also have a solid freshman class working really hard to give us what we need," said Gray. "The focus and energy out here has been great to see."
Gray will have another pupil in camp starting Wednesday as redshirt freshman Sonny Sanitoa - pronounced SUN-e-TOW-ah -- will make his way up to Ely. Sanitoa was injured while the team was still practicing in Las Vegas and stayed behind to be checked out. Head coach Bobby Hauck said he found out today that surgery wasn't needed, so Sanitoa (6-3, 235) will re-join his teammates while rehabbing the injury. The import from American Samoa had a good spring and was expected to challenge for time at an end spot this fall.
BIG GUY KEEPING EYE ON LITTLE LEAGUE
Credit the idea for this note to UNLV-grad-turned-Bay-Area-journalist Paul Gutierrez: redshirt quarterback Nick Sherry (6-5, 235), who is here battling for the Rebels' starting spot under center, was all smiles when asked about his hometown team from California advancing to the Little League World Series. Petaluma National won the West Region championship over the weekend after going undefeated against a group of teams that included North Las Vegas. Petaluma downed a team from Hawaii to clinch the title.
Sherry played on the rival Petaluma American Little League Team but was excited when he found out Petaluma National earned a spot in the big show.
"It was awesome to see the hometown team make it through," he said. "We played on the field right next to them and we beat National the year I was there. I was a pitcher and shortstop back then. I used to be smaller and faster."
Eight teams from the United States and eight international teams will fight it out for the Little League crown in Williamsport, Pa., Aug. 16-26.
