#CampRebel: Scouting The Safeties

Aug. 16, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After holding its second off day of #CampRebel, UNLV football got back to work on Tuesday morning at Rebel Park. The team practiced in full pads for the first time since its scrimmage last Saturday for just over two hours.

After the morning training session, the team met for lunch and went through meetings on campus.

Scouting The Safeties
The safety spot lost perennial tackling machine Peni Vea to graduation but boasts a pair of seniors to help keep the position on solid footing -- Troy Hawthorne at SS and Kenny Keys at FS.

Hawthorne has appeared in every game since the 2013 season but will be looking to make his first start this fall. Last year he grabbed his first career interception against Idaho State and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown, which marked team's first pick-six in five years.

Keys looks to make his first start this fall since his freshman year. Last year he forced a fumble and recorded his third career interception, first since 2012, in week two when he intercepted UCLA's Jerry Neuheisel and returned it 34 yards.

Others in the mix include returner Dalton Baker and redshirts Javin White, Evan Austrie and Soli Afalava .

"We're a little thin at safety," head coach Tony Sanchez said. "Hawthorne and Keys give great effort but we have to get a little better there this year."
