Black Jersey Déjà Vu|
Aug. 17, 2008
REBEL CAMP 2008 - Yogi Berra would have been shaking his head at UNLV `s practice on Sunday, as a pair of Rebels were wearing the Black Jersey for a second time in camp.
In fact, for the second straight day of practice, junior linebacker Jason Beauchamp (San Diego, CA/Steele Canyon HS) earned the famed garb. He was joined by sophomore lineman Matt Murphy (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro HS), who was the offensive selection. Both had strong scrimmages on Saturday and were rewarded for their efforts by the coaching staff.
"Jason made a lot of big plays yesterday and was all over the field," UNLV head coach Mike Sanford said. "Matt paced a great effort by the offensive line yesterday as well."
Murphy graded out at 88 percent following yesterday's scrimmage, and was glad to have the Black Jersey on again during Sunday's practice.
"It is an honor to get the jersey and it makes you want to go out and keep it," Murphy said. "Camp so far has been really good. I am learning to read defenses better and overall the offensive line, the offense and the entire team have really improved."
The honorable mentions on offense were linemen Johan Asiata (Kalihi, HI/Yuba College), John Gianninoto (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Hills HS) and Sifa Moala (Inglewood, CA/El Camino CC) while Isaako Aaitui (Pago Pago, America Samoa/Faga'itua HS), Starr Fuimaono (Chula Vista, CA/Bonita Vista HS) and Daryl Forte (Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) just missed the jersey on the defense.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW
Asked to pick out five positives from Saturday's scrimmage after having the chance to look at the tape, Sanford highlighted these points:
-The defense did a nice job defending the run. -The defensive line rushed the passer very well. -Sophomore quarterback Omar Clayton (Normal, IL/Normal Community HS) looked very good in the two-minute offense segment of the scrimmage. -Improved in special teams by going through several different situations live and also found areas that need to be worked on in special teams. -Very pleased with the depth of the defensive line.
PEEPLES RETURNS TO PRACTICE
There was no one on the field Sunday that enjoyed the 20 five-minute sessions more than David Peeples (North Las Vegas, NV/Cheyenne HS), who was practicing for the first time. The senior running back, who had been on the sidelines due to an injured foot, practiced for the first time in fall camp.
Peeples was just in a jersey and helmet and will have to go through the mandatory acclimation period before putting on full pads. Nonetheless, he was simply glad to be back playing football.
"It felt like one of the best days of my life," an elated Peeples said following practice. "Being away like that really makes you realize how lucky you are to be able to play football."
The Rebels will hold their final two-a-day at their off-campus site and the first one will get underway at 9:40 a.m. with the evening session starting at 5:30 p.m. UNLV will then practice for the final time off campus and return to Las Vegas on Aug. 19.
