Playing The UNLV Name Game|
Aug. 18, 2011
CAMP REBEL (UNLVRebels.com) - Camp Rebel saw one practice in 91-degree afternoon sun on Thursday before the players enjoyed a barbecue dinner. The squad will be back for its next set of double-days on Friday before a Saturday afternoon scrimmage.
PLAYING THE NAME GAME WITH THE REBEL ROSTER
Taking a look at UNLV football's 102-player active roster, some unusual names and themes jump out at you.
There are four hyphenated last names among the current Rebels (DB Eric Tuiloma-Va'a, LB Spencer Hill-Hale, DL Trent Allmang-Wilder and DL Aveyon Jackson-Walker). That total is only one more than players named DAVIS (walk-on freshman DB Travone Davis, sophomore WR Kurt Davis, and rookie receiver and emerging pick-to-click Davante Davis from Galena Park, TX).
There are two players named Vea (returnee William and newcomer Peni) but they are not related. However, the Hassons (Tajh and Tim) are indeed half-brothers. Three of Rebels have initials in their first name: RB turned LB C.J. Cox (yes to periods), walk-on WR AJ Martin (no to periods) and senior DE B.J. Bell (periods).
The 2011 squad sports a Prince (RB Oroke) and a Princeton (LB Jackson), a Chase (PK Lansford) and a Justice (DB Sarcedo), and a Trey (WR Mays) and a Tani (LB Maka). And don't forget about Imari (RB Thompson) and Chaisson (DL Prescott) to go with Irshad (WR Stolden) and Drayquan (DB Crawford, who goes by Dre).
Want some animal surnames? We got those too, with QB Caleb Herring, DB Quinton POINTER and DB Mike Horsey.
