Davis Named To Another Watch List|
Aug. 20, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior wide receiver Devante Davis was one of 43 players named Wednesday on the official watch list for the second annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
The award was launched last season to honor the nation's top college football offensive player who was either born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or plays at a college located in the Lone Star State. The honoree must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define the award's namesake -- former NFL running back great Earl Campbell (nicknamed the Tyler Rose) -- including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity. Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty won the inaugural award.
Davis, who was also on last year's Watch List along with former Rebel running back Tim Cornett, was born in Houston and graduated from North Shore High School located in nearby Galena Park, Texas. The nation's leading returning touchdown catcher from last season with a school-record 14, Davis was a unanimous choice for Preseason First Team All-Mountain West by Lindy's, Athlon and Phil Steele's preview publications as well as the league's official media list. Lindy's also named him the league's "Top Deep Threat" after a junior season that saw him finish with 87 receptions for 1,290 yards.
Davis' 2,144 combined yards in 2012-13 made him the first player in school history to go over 2,000 yards through the air in a two-season span. Earlier this summer he was one of 77 players named to the watch list for the prestigious Maxwell Award, which is given to the national player of the year, and was also named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List and the College Football Performance Awards Wide Receiver Trophy Watch List.
The Tyler Rose Award list will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to four finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and the previous winner. The finalists will be brought to Tyler, Texas, for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards Banquet scheduled for Jan. 14, 2015.
