Senior quarterback Kurt Nantkes had a perfect throwing night, completing all six of his pass attempts for 62 yards, as UNLV's offense scored four touchdowns in the Fan Appreciation Scrimmage Saturday.
Enjoying nice weather at Sam Boyd Stadium, a crowd of nearly 2,000 also watched sophomore signal-caller Shane Steichen complete four of seven attempts for 60 yards.
Las Vegas native and senior running back Dyante Perkins scored on two rushing touchdowns (five and one yard) as part of 23 yards on five carries. Also finding the end zone was Alvin Marshall, whose 39 yards on just two carries included a 17-yard score. Erick Jackson had the other TD with a five-yard scamper as part of his 39 yards on eight attempts.
All-America candidate Earvin Johnson led all receivers with three catches for 48 yards while tight end Greg Estandia's two grabs went for 34 yards. Defensively, freshman defensive back Jeff Brown led the way with five total tackles. Senior cornerback Ruschard Dodd-Masters scored for the defense with a 61-yard interception return off an errant Tyler Arciaga pass.
UNLV's special teams were also impressive as place-kickers Sergio Aguayo (37 yards) and Hubi Schulze Zumkley (42 and 47) made all three of their field-goal attempts.
The Rebel players get Sunday off before returning to their preseason camp schedule with two practices on Monday. Camp closes Friday in preparation for the traditional game-week schedule. UNLV opens the season September 5 at No. 14 Tennessee on a special Sunday night game on ESPN2, beginning at 5 p.m. PDT.
