VIDEO/STORY #CampRebel Report: DBs Effort Shining In Camp

Aug. 23, 2017

LAS VEGAS ( - The final week of #CampRebel continued Wednesday at Rebel Park with the last full pads session before camp wraps.

The practice featured some intense one-v-one drills, which included a physical battle between the first-team offensive linemen and the first-team defensive linemen. The defensive backs also worked heavily on man coverage situations throughout the day, where they were focused on defending deep passes down the sideline and quick hits across the middle.

Like the linebacker position, defensive back was a spot that had some uncertainty heading into the season with not a lot experience returning. While the safeties will benefit from the addition of graduate transfer Chauncey Scissum, who played 30 games with seven starts in three years at Syracuse, the cornerback crew will be young and inexperienced, but more athletic than they have been the last couple seasons, according to head coach Tony Sanchez.

The addition of new cornerbacks coach David Lockwood should also help. Lockwood joined UNLV after having spent four seasons at Arizona in the same role. The former Big 12 defensive coordinator has an extensive coaching background, which should lend well to developing the young players at the position. One thing he has appreciated since his arrival is his group's willingness to go all out.

"The biggest thing that I've been pleasantly surprised with is the effort," said Lockwood. "The kids are giving effort and they've been coachable and as a coach that's what you want out of your guys."

He's also seen some individuals stand out during camp.

"Guys are stepping up," said Lockwood. "Ty'Jason Roberts, a kid that was a walk-on tryout in the spring, is doing well. Jericho Flowers has been giving great effort, he just has to continue to learn the position after being moved to wideout in 2016 and then back to corner. Tim Hough has the most experience out of the group, he's been giving great effort too and just needs to continue to work on his technique and get better. Robert Jackson was hurt a year ago, so hopefully we can keep him healthy. Jocquez Kalili, another walk-on who transferred in, he's a local kid who has been a pleasant surprise. He came out in his first showing (in the first scrimmage) and didn't have a lot of confidence, but came out in the last scrimmage and rose to the challenge."
