LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV football head coach Bobby Hauck has launched a new tradition at the program with the introduction of the "Battle Born Jersey No. 36," the school announced Monday.
In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state to enter the union, and the state's official slogan, which also appears on the state flag, is "Battle Born," reflecting the state's entry on the Union side during the American Civil War.
Beginning this season, Rebel Football Jersey No. 36 -- complete with a patch displaying the state flag on the back of the jersey, will be worn by a Nevadan who best exemplifies the Battle Born spirit of his state and the toughness and pride of Rebel Football.
The inaugural recipient of Battle Born Jersey No. 36 is starting senior linebacker Ronnie Paulo, who turned in his normal No. 56 just in time for the official team photo shoot on Saturday.
The 6-2, 235-pound defender was born in Africa but grew up in the Silver State and graduated from Western High School in Las Vegas in 2006. Named preseason second team All-MWC by Phil Steele's, Paulo was also ranked the No. 52 ILB in the nation.
UNLV opens its season Saturday by hosting No. 12 Wisconsin. Kickoff at Sam Boyd Stadium is set for 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now by calling (702) 739-FANS or logging on to www.unlvtickets.com.
