UNLV – Washington State Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Mike Leach opening statement…

“On another game that goes down to the wire and having to defend at the end: “Well it did and it shouldn’t have. We had 5,000 fans come here, which is impressive. Washington State sold 5,000 tickets this game, and they’re incredibly supportive. I can’t see enough about that. I thought we got a week better as a team. I think we got UNLV’s best shot. Heck, they should’ve beaten Minnesota, who is a pretty good football team. The thing is that we’re not really compounding the effort the way we should. We did some good things. We had contributions on offense, defense and special teams. We’re explosive and we gave up some explosives. We need to get better on third down, both sides of the ball. One of the biggest things is that we need to rise together. One side gets them against the ropes, the other side needs to respond. We need to be a little better when the meat’s on the table.”

On Connor Halliday knowing he would start tonight

“He had a pretty good idea in the middle of the week.”

On Connor Halliday’s performance…

“Thought he played good. For a guy who hadn’t played football for a long time, I thought he played good. Obviously, two balls he’d like to have back. One he threw behind the guy and the other one he just threw off his back foot. I thought, really calm for a guy that hasn’t played a lot. I think his demeanor with his team was good.”

On fatigue and technique breakdown in the fourth quarter

“I’ll have to take a look at some of those (seven penalties). The thing is we need to be tougher in the fourth quarter. It’s as simple as that. We played hard and did some good things, and then our technique breaks down. We need to stop entertaining fatigue. I think we tell ourselves that we are fatigued long before we are actually fatigued. Part of being fatigued is a decision. And everybody goes out here and everybody’s tied; big deal. Like the other guys on the other side aren’t tired. We’re jumping on the fatigue bandwagon way to quick. We need to be tougher.”

On the tempo at the end of the third quarter to the start of the fourth

“The good stuff we did was very similar to the stuff I like to see. We’ve got to be more consistent with it.”

On defense letting UNLV off the hook

“No question. That’s the thing. We’ve got to get better on both sides of the ball on third down. If you judge our performance on first and second down, it’s really, really good. Especially for a team where we are at right now. If you judged it on third down it is astronomically bad, and we’ve got to get better at it.”

On missing a chance to put the pedal to the metal at the end of the game

“Yeah, like about probably eight different times over the course of the game. No question.
