UNLV Press Conference Quotes

Sept. 18, 2011

UNLV Head Coach Bobby Hauck
Opening Statement…
"A lot more fun than last week. I’m excited for our team, I’m happy our guys fought back from last week. They went to work, came out, played extremely well and beat a good football team. That being said, I feel for Hawai’i too because they are a really good football team and we caught them at a good time. They came over here and had to stay on the mainland for a week in a hotel after their game with Washington. Give credit where credit is due, they’re a good team, but we caught them on a good night for us. I’m really excited and proud of our team. A lot of football teams would have cashed in their chips after what happened, playing two good BCS teams, getting whipped, came back and beat a good team. I’m fired up for our guys. Terrific job by our assistant coaches getting our guys ready to play. In a week like this it’s not easy, so our assistant coaches deserve a huge pat on the back this week."

On the defensive change from last week to this week…
"The same thing we all talk about, we were not lacking effort or intensity. We were lined up, nothing wrong with our scheme, it comes down to making plays when it’s our turn to make them. Tonight our guys made plays. We tackled well, we played our gaps, we rushed the passer, we made plays with the ball down field. All the things I said we needed to do on Monday and Tuesday our guys went and did. I’m proud of them for going and getting it done."

On Payne’s touchdown catch in the third quarter…
"That catch was as good a catch as you’ll ever see. It was a big, big time catch and Phil was good when the ball came his way, but was really good when the ball didn’t come his way in the run game. He and Michael Johnson were throwing down field and getting after people and the most fired up I saw Phil and Johnson was when they knocked a guy down and ran over him. It shows that these guys want to win and they don’t care how we do it."

On the offensive line’s play and the run game tonight…
"I thought that they took the fight to Hawai’i tonight. I was proud of them because their defensive line is very good, I think both of their defensive tackles are NFL prospects and they both have a chance to be draftable guys. We were very impressed with them on film. I’m proud of our guys, a little undersized inside at the guard spots, but they fought their tails off tonight."

On the game being a confidence builder heading into next week…
"Well we hope so. Like I said initially, we were lower than low a week ago, and should have been, but this group has a lot of character and determination and our assistant coaches as I mentioned did a nice job of getting our team to rally back and get ready to play and these guys really went and played and hopefully we can go have a great week of practice and find a way to get a win next weekend and get to 2-2."

Defensive Lineman Matt Kravetz
On the defensive success early on…
"Our secondary had a tremendous night, that helped the defensive line get a lot of pressure and some sacks and tackles for a loss. They just did a great job tonight and hats off to them for giving us on the line an opportunity to do what we did."

On the pressure put on Moniz in the second half…
"I think from watching film from this year you have to rattle him a little in order for him to feel the pressure. We knew if we got pressure on him how he’d react and jumped on the opportunity from there."

On the comparison from where they were a week ago to today…
"Its night and day, it’s amazing, but we have to build off this and just keep rolling from here."

Wide receiver Phillip Payne
On getting the offense back on track…
"We fed off the defense tonight, they played a great game tonight, same thing with our special teams. We were able to just feed of their energy and put it to work for us on the offensive side of the ball."

On breaking through after two tough games…
"Most people would get down after getting beat like that the first two games of the season, but we came out here and went to work. We worked all week. Hawai’i is a good team, but we had to show that blue-collar work that we take pride in."
