Locally Produced Rebels Go Extra Yard For Teachers

LAS VEGAS ( - Four UNLV football players went back to school in a new way Monday when they visited their local high schools to visit a favorite educator as part of Extra Yard For Teachers week.

The foursome came bearing gifts as they surprised their selected educator with a gift basket full of UNLV T-shirts, posters and of course, an apple for teacher. Also included were four tickets to this week's Rebel home game vs. Idaho, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium. Tickets for the special Friends & Family Night start as low as $9, plus fees, if purchased prior to game day by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting

Two players -- freshman offensive linemen Julio Garcia and Jaron Caldwell went back to their alma mater, Bishop Gorman High School. Caldwell surprised teacher Kevin Nixon while Garcia visited teacher Mike Wright.

Heading over to Palo Verde High School, junior defensive lineman Mike Hughes Jr. headed upstairs to visit his former chemistry teacher, Tom Steinline.

Finally, sophomore defensive back Tim Hough showed up at Desert Pines High School to thank school counselor Kristine Korth.

Organized by the College Football Playoff Foundation, #EYFT is an eight-day period (Sept. 17-24) dedicated to celebrating teachers in which the CFP Foundation partners with universities, conferences and bowl games around the country.
