1984 Bowl Champs To Be Honored

Sept. 22, 2009

LAS VEGAS - UNLV will honor its best Division One football team in history as part of next month's Homecoming events, the Athletics Department announced Tuesday.

The 1984 Rebels, under the direction of head coach Harvey Hyde and boasting players such as quarterback/punter Randall Cunningham, running backs Kirk Jones and Ickey Woods, conference defensive MVP Aaron Moog and linebacker Daryl Knox, went undefeated in Pacific Coast Athletic Association play at 7-0. The team earned a spot in the California Bowl where it downed Toledo 30-13 in Fresno's Bulldog Stadium en route to a final overall record of 11-2.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of that record-breaking season, members of the 1984 squad will gather on Friday, Oct. 16 for a reunion at the South Point Hotel from 7-9 p.m. Players and coaches from that team can RSVP by calling (702) 895-2474.

The following evening (Oct. 17), the 1984 team will join all UNLV football lettermen as guests of head coach Mike Sanford and the 2009 Rebels at the Homecoming game vs. Utah at Sam Boyd Stadium. Representatives of the 1984 team will serve as honorary captains at the pregame coin flip and the entire squad will take the field to be recognized between the first and second quarters.

All former UNLV football players and one guest are invited to join the Oct. 17 festivities, which will include a pregame barbecue in the north end zone from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and a player tunnel welcoming the current team on to the field to face the Utes at 7 p.m.

UNLV football lettermen must RSVP by October 9 by contacting Sara Swanson at (702) 895-2474 or by e-mail at
