WEEK FIVE EDITION: The Utah State Game.
The sight of several UNLV players openly showing a deep emotional reaction after the team's 38-35 victory over Air Force on Saturday is one that will not soon be forgotten...Tim Cornett's 117.8 rushing average ranks 11th nationally...Perhaps the most startling statistical turnaround from Saturday was the dramatic about-face in rushing efficiency, as the Rebels were held to just 40 yards on 14 first-half carries, then erupted to finish with 199 yards on 40 carries...Taking every factor into consideration, a solid case could be made that Air Force is the best team that the Rebels have played thus far...UNLV football will be well represented at the 2012 UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony on October 12th, as former All-America cornerback Kevin Thomas and the 1984 California Bowl champion Rebel football squad will be inducted, and Kenny Mayne will appear to receive the Silver Rebel Award...The Rebels' 52.1% showing on third down offense is good for 17th in the nation...While numerous offensive players like Cornett, Nick Sherry, and Bradley Randle are gaining well-deserved recognition, an extra ration of kudos is due to junior linebacker Tani Maka, whose ten total tackles plus a key fumble recovery against Air Force earned him Mountain West Player of the Week honors...The fact that Utah State assistant coach Mike Sanford served as UNLV's head coach from 2005-2009 provides an intriguing subplot to this Saturday's showdown.
