WEEK NINE EDITION:
The San Diego State Game
The recent announcement of the establishment of the Governor's Series, an all-encompassing competition between UNLV and Nevada,Reno that includes 15 sports plus an academic element, promises to spice up an already inflamed rivalry ... It has been quite some time since the Rebels have faced a defense as stout as Boise State's, and don't hold your breath waiting for them to encounter another unit equal in strength of that of the Broncos ... Nice to see Devante Davis cut loose at Louisiana Tech with eight catches for 186 yards, both career highs, and the most yardage reeled in by a UNLV receiver in a game since Lenny Ware racked up 200 back in '96 ... Rebel placekicker Nolan Kohorst, a Green Valley High product, possesses an understated confidence that has served him well. Despite his missed field goal in Boise, Kohorst has developed into one of the most efficient kickers in the Mountain West having made 9 out of 11 this fall ... Whether it's facing members of the media or an oncoming blitz, quarterback Nick Sherry displays an uncommon degree of admirable poise for a freshman ... Kudos to UNLV sophomore tight end Taylor Barnhill for his fabulous touchdown reception in triple coverage versus Louisiana Tech. Barnhill's impressive catch won Week Six of voting for the GEICO Play of the Year, and will compete against seven other weekly winners in the finals during the first week of November.
