Rebels Announce 2008 Team Captains
Nov. 20, 2008
LAS VEGAS - After using game-by-game captains for the first 11 games of the season, UNLV head coach Mike Sanford on Thursday announced the program's permanent team captains for the 2008 season.
Voted on by the players, captains must be seniors and there is one each from offense, defense and special teams. The captains for 2008 are wide receiver Casey Flair (Anchorage, Alaska/East HS), defensive back Lorenzo Bursey Jr. (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) and punter Dack Ishii (Huntington Beach, CA/Knoxville (TN) Catholic HS).
Flair is the school's all-time leading receiver with 199 catches and has caught at least one football in every game of his Rebel career (a school-record 46 games). This season he is second on the team with 46 receptions for 523 yards and four touchdowns. He also has taken over as the top punt returner, averaging 8.8 yards per attempt.
Bursey is fifth on the team with 54 total tackles, including two for loss. The former wide receiver had his first interception as a Rebel in the season-opening victory over Utah State.
Ishii, who is also a reserve quarterback for the Rebels, earned the starting punting job in Game Two at Utah. A member of the Ray Guy Award Watch List earlier this fall, he has averaged more than 42 yards in six of 11 games in 2008.
The trio will act as the Rebel team captains on Saturday for the regular-season finale at San Diego State. UNLV (5-6) is looking to become bowl eligible with a victory over the Aztecs. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT and the game will be televised by CBS College Sports.
